THE WHITE NIGHT

By 1975, Angola had won its war of independence from Portugal and, as anticipated, erupted into a civil war between the communists and the capitalists for control of the new country. The last of the Shalom Project mercenaries were sent into the African conflict, vacating their Guyana encampment and making room for the first Peoples Temple pioneers. It was only at this point that Jones signed the land lease with the Guyana government that had been agreed to back in 1973.

In the first year, the Jonestown Medical and Agricultural Project was a paradise. Memories of their difficult lives in the poor neighborhoods of San Francisco and Oakland soon faded as residents enthusiastically set out to carve a new life from the jungle. They were building a town and enjoying every minute of it, that is, until Jones arrived a year later with a litany of harsh new rules and regulations to begin the experiments. Overnight, their idyllic life turned into a hell on earth; a hell that would end with something that Jones called, “The White Night.”

Jones ran Jonestown as if it was an insane asylum, and to a large extent, it was. Jones was the head psychiatrist and under him was a medical doctor with a staff of nurses and guards who acted as orderlies. The residents or patients received the same anti-psychotic drugs as mental patients. The difference was they came to Jonestown sane and were driven insane by Jones. Back in his early years in Indiana, Jones had worked as an orderly in a mental hospital, where he met his future wife who worked there as a nurse. Years later, his army of nurses all worked at the Mendocino State Mental Hospital in California. Running an insane asylum was their stock in trade. It was their expertise and it was Jonestown.

Jones had spent his entire life recruiting people to join his temple, but all that stopped in Guyana. There were no Guyanese in the Peoples Temple and for good reason. Jones already had his ideal cross-section of test persons and, besides, Prime Minister Burnham had forbidden him from involving any of his citizens.

The dates on the five year lease were never changed so, even though Jones did not sign it until 1975, it was still set to expire in December of 1978. Jones originally scheduled the “White Night” for November 9, 1978 to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the “Crystal Night,” the first officially sanctioned persecution of the Jews by the German government. The date was acceptable to his CIA sponsors because they wanted to wait until after the November 3rd elections to see if Congressman Ryan was reelected or their problem just went away. Ryan was reelected, but too busy thanking his supporters back in California to meet Jones’s November 9th schedule. He needed another week.
